HAIR GROWTH MYTH BUSTER !

There are around 100,000 hair follicles on the scalp, which is why it is normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day. Your hair has a cycle that repeats its self just like the concept of recycling. Therefore, If you do not treat your hair and you are only applying heat, doing hairstyles, and not giving it the components that it need; the cycle will not work in your favor. There are 3 stages of hair growth in the cycle, from actively beginning growth from the root to hair shedding. These are known as the Anagen phase, Catagen phase and Telogen phase. 

Let us explain.

 

1. The Anagen phase is the period of growth. The hair strands are receiving a healthy blood supply. Hair actively grows from the roots for an average of 2-7 years before hair follicles becomes dormant and moves on to the 2 stage. In this time, hair can grow anywhere between 18-30 inches.

If you properly took care fo your hair in the last stage then most of your hair strands should be nourished enough, to where it withholds not having an active blood supply that usually is providing the nourishments your hair needs to maintain shiny, healthy and strong. 

 

3.The resting phase called Telogen, at this stage your hair remains dormant for 3 months basically doing nothing until the cycle restarts and hairs start growing again. This stage has a sub phase called Exogen and that's when the hair actually falls out.

 

4. Hair strands and/or different areas of your scalp can be in any different stage/phase at any different time.  

For example, your hairline can be in the telogen or exogen phase (dormant and falling out) while the rest of your hair is in the amagen stage (growing)

  

Now that you understand the growth cycle, many men and woman loose hair as they grow older due to certain diseases such as thyroid problems, diabetes and/or lupus.  Other causes are low protein, a  family  history or poor nutrition. What stress can do is unmask the tendency if you have pattern baldness (family genes) or creates longer period of the Telogen stage. And we can release tension / stress by doing the following :
